Border (Gräns) (review)

This is an unusual film with a fantasy twist that makes it even more bizarre. Eva Melander plays an unusual-looking border guard with some unique animal-like qualities, especially her sense of smell, which she uses to catch smugglers. One day, she meets a man who has the same Cro-Magnon features as her and everything changes. While this has the measured pacing of a foreign film, it’s constantly compelling. The actors are extraordinary and the direction often visceral. If you appreciate the bizarre, presented in a unique subdued style, this is at the top of 2018’s list. Swedish with subtitles. (Criterion Cinemas only)
