For anyone who doesn’t remember this historical event, this movie will fill you in…plus keep you thoroughly involved in the unfolding circumstances. Jason Clarke is fantastic as Senator Kennedy. He captures enough of the idiosyncratic look and accent, but more importantly, he beautifully creates a nuanced and flawed character. Watching as he and his team create the “coverup” maintains interest without ever letting the pace lag. The rest of the cast is also excellent. There are never any grand revelations or big moments, but director John Curran has crafted an intelligent, compelling investigation into political power.

  1. When I was in my early teens (as best I can remember), my family went out to Martha’s Vineyard for a few summers in a row. A friend of my mother had an old Barn on the “non-commercial” end of the island that had been converted into a summer “big” cabin – no electricity, water pumped from a well 1/4-mi. away that had a gasoline motor to be started each morning. As “tourists” we visited all around MV, and actually went out to Chappaquiddick, well before the dates of the “event”. When it hit the news I recall thinking “I’ve been there”. It was a dangerous bridge, very narrow, but the road was NOT one you could take “accidentally”. It all seemed like a setup/coverup at the time, and it still does.
