Discovering Jack Whitehall (reviews)

I first saw Jack Whitehall as an amusing guest on The Graham Norton Show.

Earlier last month, I watched his Netflix standup: I’m Only Joking. In addition to being smart, clever and funny, he always got a great audience reaction when he mentioned his father. Until recently, I had no idea that he’d created a hilarious travel series, Jack Whitehall: Travels with My Father for Netflix.

The first season takes them to Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia with subsequent shows visiting Eastern Europe and the American west. What makes this more fun than most travel shows is Jack’s dad. He’s proper English in so many ways (spends the first few days on vacation in a suit and tie), but also a crusty soul who stubbornly holds to his standards, staunchly refuses to do some things and often has soul-crushing comments to his son…all of it hilarious. Sure, they see some interesting sites and do some cool stuff, but it’s much more about their dysfunctional relationship and the comic interactions that make it so damn entertaining.

NOTE: Many of Jack’s other shows are also on Netflix. I’ve become a big fan, so will be checking out more of them.
