Toruk: The First Flight (review)

The latest touring show by Cirque du Soleil is inspired by James Cameron’s “Avatar” and it’s an eye-popping inspiration. There’s a thread of a plot that serves to showcase magnificent visuals: a gigantic set that envelopes the Coliseum with amazing projections on every surface, beautiful lighting and fanciful creatures. If you’ve seen other Cirque shows, this one is less about the acrobats and more about the spectacle (although there’s plenty of energetic athleticism and a few feats integrated into the story). The grandeur demands that the pace moves slowly, but that allows plenty of time to absorb the beauty  of the imaginative staging. Toss in non-stop music with live singing (and excellent sound) and you get an impressive experience full of inspired visual wonder.
