John Knapp leaving RTP

John Knapp is stepping down as the long-time artistic director of Richmond Triangle Players to pursue professional interests outside of Virginia. His tenure ends with this season’s final show, Cabaret, after which he and husband Tim Gillham (founder of the Richmond Men’s Chorus and Richmond Women’s Chorus) will move to Baltimore.

RTP associate artistic director Noreen Barnes (heads TheatreVCU’s graduate studies program) will act as interim, while the Board begins the process for a permanent replacement for Knapp.

During his tenure, Knapp directed 25+ plays. Like his early counterpart, RTP co-founder Michael Gooding, Knapp never was paid for his work, contributing his time, talents and expertise because of his belief in RTP’s vision.

“John’s contributions to RTP are impossible to quantify,” Crosby stated.  “There simply would not be the RTP we know today without John Knapp.”
