I Am Jonas or Boys (review)

This kept popping up on my Netflix queue, so I finally decided to give it a watch (also on Amazon as “Boys,” the original French name). It revolves around a man who’s grappling with a dark event in his past. The story alternates between his 16th year, when he meets an audacious boy who becomes his crush and the current timeline, which finds him an aimless mess, sex addicted, unable to maintain a relationship and still haunted by that beau. While I was expecting the big revelation to be more shocking, turns out that this is more a low-key character study than a heavily plot-based drama. The performances are convincing, but the wandering style and minimal activity will appeal more to lovers of foreign style cinema than those looking for a good gay romance.
