Kinky Boots (review)

THE PLAY: Based on the non-musical movie about a man who inherits his family’s failing shoe manufacturing business. He tries to turn things around with the inspiration of a ferocious drag queen.

THE PRODUCTION: This is a pretty standard Broadway show in structure and style. It’s the subject matter that’s unique (if you ignore “La Cage aux Folles”). The story is a traditional narrative that’s peppered with generically pop songs (by Cindy Lauper) and some amusing comic bits. While all the performances are all played with comic verve, it’s Timothy Ware (as the sassy, lovable drag queen) whose delightfully droll delivery steals the show. The message of acceptance drives the few dramatic moments. While the voices are expectedly strong, the lyrics sometimes got garbled. The set is primarily a shoe plant with insets that suggest other locations. Naturally, the highlight of the costumes is the obviously outrageous drag ensembles. Running time: 2:25

THE POINT: While this musical breaks no new ground, the production is slick, entertaining and fun.
