Mucho Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado (review)

Many Americans have never heard of Walter Mercado, but he’s a legend in the Spanish speaking world. Consider him the Liberace of astrology: outrageous capes, oversized jewelry, your grandmother’s hairdo and an over-the-top androgynous personality. This doc outlines his enormously popular career, as well as his life from boyhood to his final days. Fortunately, most of the narrative comes directly from Mercado, so we’re treated to lots of his unique outlook. In addition to interviews his lifelong “assistant” and several family members, Lin Manuel Miranda has a special encounter in the film. Mercado certainly could be considered laughable by some, but his popularity made him a beloved icon in North and South America. 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)
