Toni Collette and Drew Barrymore play best friends since childhood, a relationship full of wild memories and special times. When one of them is diagnosed with cancer, it presents new challenges for them and their families. No question this is a chick flick, but the weepie component feels forced, making it fall short. Even though the impact of the disease is depicted in devastating detail, it’s trying too hard for sympathy and sobs. The performances are engaging, the humorous repartee softens the setbacks and Catherine Hardwicke’s direction is effective. It just lacks the dramatic punch that would have made it memorable.
