Othello (Review)

THE PLAY: Shakespeare’s famous tragedy of jealousy (Othello thinks Desdemona is two-timing him) and betrayal  (trusted servant Iago plots Othello’s downfall).

THE PRODUCTION: Director Jan Powell has kept the drama compelling with a combination of deft staging, sharp pacing and effective performances. Unfortunately, Stephen Seals (in the title role) uses his rich, resonant voice to declaim the dialogue without exhibiting much depth of emotion. On the other hand, Ryan Bechard’s villain is deliciously evil, yet subtly brilliant…never afraid to let a pause work for him. The technical aspects serve the production well, although the swordplay seemed tentative and stagy.

THE POINT: A well-staged, involving evening of passionate tragedy.
