The Art of Racing in the Rain (review)

This film is running the same track as A Dog’s Purpose (my review) and the much less successful A Dog’s Journey (my review). They have 2 things in common with this one: The story is told from a dog’s sage POV (voiced by Kevin Costner) and it goes for tears, tears, tears (but this one never succeeds). Milo Ventimiglia plays a race car driver whose passion for his career, as well as his love for his wife and child are chronicled thru the eyes of his canine companion. Tragedy strikes more than joy to the point of frustration, instead of sympathy. The cast does OK, but the writing is too manipulative and the direction rather bland. Dog lovers will be able to appreciate the love, but that cheap ploy never creates much genuine emotion. (On HBO, Amazon, Vudu, Hulu, YouTube)
