Robin Hood (review)

Director Otto Bathurst is best known for the TV series “Peaky Blinders” and his rough, raw style is apparent in this revision of the classic tale. Taron Egerton plays the titular lord, who teams up with a Moor (Jamie Foxx) to take on the immoral Sherriff and the Catholic church in an attempt to help his village’s struggling workers. Besides the fact that the period is funked up with modern, punk elements, the plot is so absurdly jiggered that it strains credibility and turns Hood into a superhero, instead of a scrappy everyman. Playing to Bathurst’s skills, there’s plenty of well-staged action and angry violence, but the overall effect of this reboot feels empty and not especially inventive.
