The BFG (review)

A young orphan catches the titular giant on his rounds collecting dreams, so he snatches her away to his home. A slow, gentle friendship develops that dominates and drags down much of the movie. Once they leave Giant Country, the energy picks up and the comic elements add some fun. The audience-pleasing highlight is an extended fart joke, no less. The look of the film is classic and colorful with magical moments of beauty. The special effects are accomplished, but they never feel real. Spielberg has almost worked too hard to craft sweet, lovely cinema, but his mild approach lacks the lively spirit that would have made the experience a delight.
