The Importance of Being Earnest (Review)

THE PLAY: Oscar Wilde’s classic is a skillful concoction of romance and mistaken identity: Two couples fall in love, but one grand dame and a particular name present obstacles to their happiness. Saucy characters, amusing situations and wildly witty aphorisms make this an immortal English comedy.

THE PRODUCTION: With a play this well-written it’s all about the language and this cast is spot on: every word rings out and rolls off their tongues with verve and assurance. The cast is a uniformly wonderful with stand out comic turns by Aly Wepplo (every expression is a gem), Stephen W. Ryan (a slow-burn butler with hilarious attitude) and Robert Throckmorton (dominating the stage with his commanding creation of Lady Bracknell). Director Jan Powell has imbued the proceedings with wonderfully funny bits and the right measure of stylized affectation. The costumes are lovely, while the set is a mashup of styles that’s more creative than attractive.

THE POINT: A stylish, hilarious production that would make Oscar wilde with delight!
