The Invisibles (review)

This film starts as a compelling drama about young Jews who chose to hide from Nazis in Berlin. All of a sudden, you’re introduced to survivors recounting the story in their own words, which begins the back-and-forth style of this hybrid docu-drama. The interviews provide a personal angle to the stories, but they also get in the way of creating any real tension in the dramatic re-enactments. There’s a taste of mild suspense once or twice, but the documentary elements dominate the narrative. Even so, these stories of bravery add an interesting new angle to the plight of the persecuted during World War II. (Criterion Cinemas only)
