Treasure Island (review)

THE PLAY: This adaptation skims the highlights and adds six songs to Robert Lewis Stevenson’s pirate adventure.

THE PRODUCTION: In at attempt to cover the plot, author Paul Deiss has relied on too much talking, when more of director John Moon’s spirited action or Deiss’ pleasant songs would have ramped up the entertainment value. As it is, the cast (most of whom play numerous characters) is having a great time with Charlie Raintree and Evan Nastaff tossing in a few comic touches. Even with all the energy and fun, the play comes alive when the actors are singing or bounding around the stage. Brian C. Barker’s set is serviceable, while Lynne M Hartman’s lighting adds variety and depth.

THE POINT: When there’s music or action, this play provides pirate fun.
