The 3rd annual Richmond International Film Festival opens this weekend (once again, I’ll be emcee). One of the few local entries is an animation from VCU teacher Ying-Fang Shen. In this video interview, she talks about her process and let’s us meet her parakeet.

This is an abbreviated note about the progress of legislation that supports our industry from the VPA:

The House has agreed to $25 million in tax credits with no funds in a grant form. The grant is normally done through a Governor’s budget item called GMPOF.

The Senate agreed to a $7.75 million grant solely through GMPOF with no tax credits whatsoever.

It’s important to us to have a blend of these two funding mechanisms so we can market to all types of filmmakers. The larger studios like credits, while the grants work better for larger independent producers and resident industry filmmakers.

You can help by calling or e-mailing your legislators and voicing your support for HB-460. Visit this link for details.

Speaking of the VPA, the new VPA-RICHMOND DISTRICT is having its first ever General Meeting 6:30, 2/24, at Artworks (320 Hull St). The Richmond District is a new addition to the existing branches in Charlottesville, Northern Virginia, Hampton Roads, & Shenandoah Valley. Meet your local reps and hear about some new projects.  Free members, $5 non-members.

The Virginia Independent Horror Film Festival is seeking 9 feature films, particularly if they were shot in Virginia or have other connections to the state. It’s scheduled for the end of September. Send an email with the pertinent information.

Final Act Drama presents Improvisation and Character Development starting 2/25 for 5 weeks (6:30-8:30pm).  Call for details (858-3446) or register online. $325 + $15.

NEW POLICY ON CASTING NOTICES: If the production or the casting agent doesn’t have a website that lists the breakdown and details to audition, it won’t run here.

Clever People Productions is in pre-production on its first feature TRAINERS and they’re casting. Visit the site for details.
