PBS has selected Virginia as the location for a new Civil War series executive produced by Ridley Scott and David W. Zucker. It’s inspired by doctors and nurse volunteers at a Union Army hospital during the Civil War and will start shooting this spring (premiering in 2016).


A late posting: according to BizSense the Westhampton Cinema is closing (for real this time).


This year’s Richmond International Film Festival (RIFF) (2/26-3/1) will show features, shorts, docs and animated films, as well as the RVA Music Showcase. Opening night includes “Wish You Well,” starring Josh Lucas and Ellen Burstyn. David Baldacci, the book’s author and the film’s producers will be there for Q&A. RIFF is teaming up with Swedish Match to spotlight Swedish culture and film, including “Force Majeure.”

Also new this year is FLOW, a one-day creative conference featuring notable guests, including Jesse Vaughan (24-time Emmy award winning director), Johnny Newman (former NBA player), Linda Forem (former GM of Radio One), David Baldacci, Jeffrey Blount (author & director of NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams) and Jean Meserve (former CNN correspondent and anchor on WTVR-TV when I was reviewing movies there).


Final Act Drama presents Improvisation & Character Development starting 2/3 for 5 weeks on Tuesdays, 6:30–8:30 at Community Idea Station Studios (23 Sesame St).
