What We Do in the Shadows (Review)

This FX series started as a movie in 2015 (my review) that was written and directed by New Zealanders Jermaine Clement (The Flight of the Conchords) and Taika Waititi (most recently, the writer/director of JoJo Rabbit (my favorite movie of 2019). The first season of the TV version premiered last year and featured more of the low-key comedy from the movie (with a new cast). It revolves around 3 vampires who live on modern day Staten Island. Sadly for them, and luckily for us, they’re pretty pitiful in their attempts to cope with modern life and their place in the vampire hierarchy. The dark humor is undeniably underplayed and some of the gags fall flat, but there’s sufficient silliness and clever moments to make it an enjoyable, off-beat escape. Keep in mind, I haven’t seen the 2nd season, so I’m basing my opinions on Season 1.

3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)

One of the stars, Matt Berry, also plays the lead in one of my other recent fave series Year of the Rabbit (yes, another rabbit reference) on IFC (here’s my review).
