Wishing Well (review)

THE PLAY: Two grown daughters come home to visit their mother, as their dysfunctional relationships are explored.

THE PRODUCTION: When you start with a play that never really connects, it’s a challenge to make the production work. This script floats on the surface with few genuine moments and the titular water feature is a contrivance that, ironically, doesn’t add any depth to the narrative.  As a result, the cast seldom succeeds (although they do manage to garner a sprinkling of laughs). Most of the time, they’re acting the roles instead of inhabiting the characters. Director Zachary Owen doesn’t help the cast warm up to the relationships. Frank Foster’s set is a clever, interesting outline of the house’s structure (although the big white wall in the center doesn’t make sense). Running time: 2:00

THE POINT: The cast misses the humanity in most of the interactions and the surface script doesn’t help.
