In the opening scene a British ship is attacked. Almost immediately, Keri Russell’s character is whisked off the London to assume the US ambassadorship. She also takes her husband (Rufus Sewell) who has a bigger rep in the world of diplomacy, which presents its own challenges. The first 3 eps fly by with her being almost overwhelmed with the responsibilities, while allowing her own less-formal style to create its own controversy. The additional eps still boast smart writing and skilled performances, but the plot goes more into discussion mode with lots of pulling people aside for private convos and other surreptitious activity. Sadly, this dilutes the tension and even though it’s still a fascinating puzzle, it’s not as gripping as the promise. To make matters more frustrating, the last ep ends with a cliffhanger that doesn’t solve the major issue and adds another shocker. (2.5 / 5)
