Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna

It became international news when cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was shot and killed on the set of the film “Rust.” This documentary starts with footage from that horrible day, then expands to cover the investigation and the ultimate completion of the film. There’s video from every aspect of the case, from the first officer’s bodycam to police and personal interviews, including Alec Baldwin, who was holding the gun, and writer/director Joel Souza, who was also shot but recovered. The entire process unfolds with interesting insight and some behind-the-scenes revelations, while social media posts are shown to reflect public response. The other aspect of the film is the tribute to the art of Hutchins, but it only includes a few cursory clips from her previous work. This unfortunate accident also sparked renewed careful consideration of firearms in movies and this film details many aspects of the issue with considered depth and slight emotion. BTW, the movie has been released, but is not currently available on streamers. 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)
