Death of a Unicorn

The setup as a comic thriller is obvious from the trailer. Sadly, it’s not a comedy or a thriller. Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega play father/daughter headed to the mountain estate of a rich pharmaceutical CEO and his family (Richard E. Grant, Téa Leoni and Will Poulter, who brings the only hit of humor to the show). They accidentally hit a unicorn on the road and take the wounded beast with them. The creature’s trauma causes its parents to show up and do lethal damage (the CGI creatures never ring true). One of the few interesting things from writer/director Alex Scharfman is create some mildly cool ways of dispatching the victims. Otherwise, there’s lots of running around and engaging in useless dialogue. Greed vs good is a tired theme and this film does little to further the discussion, much less provide any genuine scares or even minor laughs. 1.5 out of 5 stars (1.5 / 5)
