Stick

I’ve usually enjoyed Owen Wilson’s hesitant comic style, but this time he’s just grating. That’s partially because this “comedy” isn’t. It’s a lot of frustrated encounters, hoping to be funny. Wilson plays a golf star, whose on-camera meltdown ruined his career. When he meets a promising young teen (Peter Dager), he sets off to make him a winner. Of course, their road trip had potential for fun and surprises, but it develops along expected lines. All of the performances are fine, it’s just the predictable script that never provides any depth. Marc Maron, as the caddie, adds his usual gruff type, while Mariana Treviño, who was the best thing about “A Man Called Otto” (my review), never gets any comic opportunities. Fortunately, the actual golf footage is minimal and usually in a montage. The series is trying to be earnest and maybe even heartwarming, but Owen’s constant whining gets in the way of any potential empathy or even fun. (Review based on 6 out of ten 30-minute eps) 1.5 out of 5 stars (1.5 / 5)
