Real-life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie play a duo whose relationship is shaky and gets worse when they move to the country. Soon after a mishap in the woods, he starts to notice weird things happening to his body. Anyone who’s ever enjoyed David Croenberg’s body horror movies will find an admirer in writer/director Michael Shanks. What’s lacking with Shanks’ work is the lack of any real scares or tension. It’s all about the revolting fleshy effects that disrupt their connection. The creepy aspects of the film are complemented by the natural chemistry that Brie and Franco have in their on-screen relationship. Even though it’s billed as a comedy, it’s never funny, but their performances help make the intensity of the metamorphosis a bit more palatable.
