For 23 years, the Ed Sullivan Show was the Sunday nite TV tradition for millions of Americans. He presented stars from every type of arts and culture, including Black singers. With some of the country still fervent about segregation, this was a risky maneuver. Despite threats from several angles, Sullivan was undeterred. This doc includes performances by many of the period’s greatest Black stars like James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, the Supremes and the Jackson 5, along with a few rock legends (Elvis and the Beatles). Their performances serve as backgrounds for various stories about the progression of Black rights in our country. Sullivan’s biographical history in included, which also frames his acceptance and appreciation of all people. While it’s fun to reminisce about the show and enjoy the song excerpts, this film celebrates Sullivan’s bravery and determination, as part of his legacy of equality and our country’s fight for universal justice.
