The films both feature tough women driving vintage cars as they navigate rough situations. One is in cinemas and the other streaming.

Honey Don’t This is the 2nd time that Ethan Coen and his wife Tricia Cooke (his wife who identifies as queer) co-wrote this comedy, which he directed. The first was “Drive Away Dolls” (my review) and both of them star Margaret Qualley. She plays a private detective who ends up involved in a case that seems to be tied to a weird church (pastored by Chris Evans, who spends more time undressed and having sex than preaching). Her investigation also involves a police officer (Aubrey Plaza) and they end up with some steamy sex scenes. What works about this film is the deadpan comic delivery from a variety of peculiar characters. There are also scenes of inventive, yet brutal violence (a Coen trait) often with a funny approach. This is a low-key, slow-burn comic adventure that’s sufficiently entertaining, but not up to the usual Coen Brothers accomplishment. 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5) Movieland link

Eenie Meanie Samara Weaving used to be a teen getaway driver, but got out of it until this movie. She catches up to her ex (Karl Glusman), who’s buck naked and they immediately take off to escape the bad guys. In order to save his life, she has to drive one final heist for her scary ex-boss (Andy Garcia). Thus begins the expected ups and downs of planning and executing the robbery of a car from the middle of a casino. Weaving flashes the usual tough chick vibe, but it’s Glusman who’s inept sweetness that captures the heart and the movie’s strongest asset. Shawn Simmons is an experienced screenwriter and this is his first directorial effort, which he pulls off with effective action and appealing characters. 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)  Hulu link
