Black Rabbit

Jude Law plays a man enjoying the success of his hot NYC restaurant, when his ne’er-do-well brother (Jason Bateman) shows up to make a mess. This dark drama gives this duo an opportunity to impress with their performances: Law is continually compelling, while Bateman stretches in new directions that most often work (although it seems a bit forced for his natural personality). The writing is strong and the taut direction keeps things forceful, even though it could use a bit of tightening. The cinematography echoes the plot’s pressure by constantly squeezing the people into tight spots, while the score by Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans is chocked with hard industrial accents. When it’s not trying to be intensely heavy or taking too long to finish almost every scene, the series can be a forceful tragedy. NOTE: Bateman directed the first 2 eps and his former “Ozark” co-star, Laura Linney, directed the 3rd and 4th. 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)
