Jack Whitehall is a popular English comedian/actor, but this show casts him as the bad guy. He plays a tutor for a wealthy family with a sinister agenda. David Duchovny and Carice van Houten are cast as the couple who are at the brunt of his plans. And as the series progresses, his evil plans become increasingly disastrous (Ep 4 is especially horrifying). Creator James Wood made the weird decision not to allow Whitehall to use any of his comic charms to counter the underlying malevolent side. This would have made him more disarming as the troubles mount. From the first shot, he glowers with unpleasant demeanor. The biggest question mark is how this supposedly broke tutor can afford his increasingly elaborate revenge plan. If you’re willing to look past the numerous plot holes, there’s an underlying diabolical drama with a European ending (literally and esthetically).
