The focus of this new version of Jane Austin’s book makes some readjustments, primarily focusing on the relationship of the two eldest sisters (Daisy Edgar-Jones & Esmé Creed-Miles). After their father dies, Mrs. Dashwood and her three daughters lose their inheritance and home, but the plot focuses primarily on the interactions with their beaux. Considering it was directed by Georgia Oakley and written by Diana Reid, you can expect a lovingly-based female-focused story of the women’s challenges and hopes for love. All of the performances are engaging with George MacKay showing sensitive depth as one of the suitors and a delightful Fiona Shaw as their eccentric aunt. The film is lovely to look at and the style is naturalistic, which gives it a more relatable tone and creates a sweetly compelling romantic adventure.
Interestingly, I saw this in Rotterdam, which featured the original English dialogue with subtitles in Dutch and my constant instinct to read the credits presented a slight challenge at first. 4.0 out of 5.0 stars
