Both of these shows are currently popular on Netflix and both deal with weird situations that may or may not pay off.

1899 This German import (dubbed in English) takes place on a steamship sailing from the UK to the US. When they encounter a sister ship abandoned, things start getting weird. This series follows several stories of passengers to add human interest, but all that really matters is what’s going on. The mysterious occurrences keep piling up, each time adding to the confusion. To make this even more frustrating, the pace is excruiasiating with overacting to boot. Ultimately, is the big reveal worth the trouble? If you enjoy elaborate mind games and period trappings, it might appeal, but if you’re just looking for a scary or at least compelling sci-fi story, this is only OK. (Eight 45-minute episodes with another season expected.) 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

The Wonder Florence Pugh plays an English nurse who travels to 1860’s Ireland to observe a girl who hasn’t eaten in 4 months. Some are hailing it as a religious miracle, while others (including the nurse) are determined to discover the truth. The laconic lifestyle of the period and setting must have dictated the tedious paceā€¦lots of whispers, dark looks and barren landscapes. Is the payoff worth the pace? The intimate, yet sparse style tries patience and the ending is unexpected, but not especially shocking. BTW, the film studio framing device added absolutely nothing. 2.5 out of 5 stars (2.5 / 5)
