Kenneth Branagh wrote and directed this semi-autobiographical film about being a boy in troubled Ireland, 1969. This is a lovely tribute to his youth, his parents and the cultural touchstones that inspired him. While the cast is warm and lovely, Jude Hill, who plays the boy, is exceptional…glowing with the wonder of life. Branagh shot many of his dialogue scenes in static wide shots, which was even more impressive to watch this young actor in extended takes. He also shot most of the film in black and white with the exception for his revelatory experiences at the theatre and movies (there’s even a quiet nod to Thor, which he directed). The soundtrack by Van Morrison adds to the Irish ambiance. The emotional momentum sometimes goes slacks, but it’s a lovingly-directed and sweetly-acted memory. 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)
