Crystal Moselle directed a film called Skate Kitchen that revolved around a group of female skateboarders. This series (now in Season 2) grew out of the characters and situations from that movie. They hang, make videos, do drugs and skate around New York, sometimes dealing with the males that dominate the sport. It sounds like this might be aimed at a limited audience, but the genuine personalities they create (all non-pros) are fascinating (esp. Nina Moran as Kirt). The things going on in their lives aren’t especially unique, but the way they’re framed and the show’s lively energy make it fun.
NOTE: A Betty used to be a derogatory term for skate girls, but they’ve reclaimed it here.
NOTE 2: Look for a cameo by legend Tony Hawk.
