Both Sides of the Blade (Fire)

A film that starts with 30 seconds of close-up water shots promises introspective, arty direction (in this case by reknown French director Claire Denis). Juliette Binoche plays a woman torn between 2 men: She’s been living with one (Vincent London) for 10 years and starts an affair with the other (GrĂ©goire Colin)when he returns to their lives. The couples go over and over the same discussions and arguments to the point of tedium. There are also side stories that slow things down. Ultimately, the monotony culminates in angry encounters between each couple, but it’s not worth the slog. Those who appreciate European drama with lots of underplayed angst and overdone dialogue might appreciate this romantic drama. (French with subtitles. NOTE: The early credits feature a final shot). 2 out of 5 stars (2 / 5)
