If you thought “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma” was a weird approach to horror (my review), it’s child’s play compared to this movie. Speaking of children, most of this film takes place on the set of a 90s kid’s show, a cross between “Barney” and “Pee-wee’s Playhouse.” The ever-cheerful orange unicorn named Buddy (voiced by Keegan-Michael Key) has a dark side and kids start disappearing. Halfway thru, there’s a seemingly unrelated sequence in the “real world.” The acts of violence are either off-camera or cartoon-like, so it’s not terrifying for one minute. The absurdity of the whole thing sometimes leads to unexpected humor, but it’s def not a comedy. Writer/director Casper Kelly has created a trippy, twisted, subversive and downright weird diversion that defies categorization, but manages to be uniquely engaging. 3.0 out of 5.0 stars
