Even though the trailer and press make this out as a dystopian future with a devastating conflict, the film’s focus is primarily on a group of reporters. They’re trying to get to DC for an interview with the endangered president. Writer/director Alex Garland has made sure to keep the politics somewhat ambiguous, so there’s no blame or much explanation for the current situation. Kirsten Dunst leads the cast as an intrepid photojournalist. Their journey is fraught with dangerous encounters, but it’s not until the final act that there’s much real “action.” Even so, the cast is compelling and their situations are sometimes frightening. There will be inevitable political statements about the film, but it’s much more about the team than the game.
