Different approaches to controversial truths

Both of these shows take a different approach to documenting a controversial true event. One is a mini-series about a woman falsely accused of murder and the other is a more traditional doc about an actor who may or may not be guilty, depending on who you believe.

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox Grace Van Patten takes the title role as the exchange student to Italy who ends up accused of her roommate’s murder. Her bizarre accusal and eventual innocence generated international attention. This series covers the entire ordeal, including her return to Italy years later to face her accusers. Van Patten encompasses the frustration and despair that challenged her character, while the rest of the cast is equally effective. Even though there is some repetition and it plays too slowly, every episode includes some shocking elements to amp up the outrage. Even though the series is well made and is mostly stressful, it’s too long and seems sometimes disjointed. Hopefully, the remaining eps will resolve the story and calm the outrage. The Truth About Jessie Smollett? This documentary is anchored by an interview with the eponymous actor, who continues his claim that he was beaten by 2 white men. His case went in different directions with additional revelations, all of which are discussed by the investigators and others involved with Smollett. Ultimately, new information is disclosed that seems to reinforce his innocence. The doc is shot in traditional style with numerous interviews and media clips. It builds a compelling story and ultimately, places that question mark in the title for the viewer to decide. 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5) Netflix link
