The rise to power of Paul Atreides continues, as he unites with other tribes to seek revenge against the people who destroyed his family. Timothée Chalamet’s performance forms the core of the film and he’s growing into his own compelling power as an actor and the character. Among his enemies, a bald, pale Austin Butler makes the most deliciously evil villain. Director Denis Villeneuve has once again created worlds with grand settings and impressive visuals. The battles are epic, while Hans Zimmer’s score can sometimes be overbearing. There’s also lots of dialogue, which, even though it’s serious, sometimes slows things down and other times manages to maintain interest. Despite the intrigue, most of the characters don’t have much backstory, just their role in the politics of the future universe. Even so, the stately visuals and intense situations keep the film involving. Even though it’s not assured, the ending certainly leaves it up for one more movie (which is Villeneuve’s plan). (3.5 / 5)
