EARLY HALLOWEEN TREATS Vol 3

This trio revives 2 popular franchises, while the third brings yet another YA fantasy to the screen.

Interview with the Vampire This is the first installment of the Immortal Universe, which is AMC’s attempt to match the Marvel and DC worlds with characters from Anne Rice’s novels. Of course, this is also the original tale that sets her vampire dynasty in motion. The “interview” framing device features a cynical writer (Eric Bogosian) with the ex of Lestat (the main vamp played by Jacob Anderson). The action flashes back to their time in New Orleans with Lestat (Sam Reid). This new version is told with plenty of bloody moments and sensual encounters. There are new ways to dispatch their prey, which keeps the killing interesting and the relationships make the dramatic parts effective. (Review based on 6 of 7 episodes). 3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)

The School of Good and Evil Paul Feig is best known for his comedies like Bridesmaids and Spy, but he’s forsaken his humorous side for this YA fantasy. Two young women decide to escape their humdrum village life and go to the titular school. Only problem is, the good one gets dropped on the bad side and vice versa. The plot is predictable, so it’s up to everything else to make this work and the production design is the film’s standout. The sets, costumes and even the special effects are dazzling. The girls are fine, but it’s the headmistresses who have the most fun (Kerry Washington & Charlize Theron). This is aimed at an audience of young people who might enjoy a modern variation on the fantasy world. 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

Hellraiser This is a reboot of the 1987 film that revolves around torturous body modification as some sort of ultimate unearthly pleasure. The mechanical puzzle box shows up in the arms of a young woman, so she and her friends venture into the dark world of pain. The creepy aspect is prevalent, but it’s not til the final few minutes that the really horrific stuff shows up and it’s disappointing when it does. Fans of the franchise may enjoy this expansion, but it’s dull and doesn’t take the series in any new direction. 2.5 out of 5 stars (2.5 / 5)
