The original Evil Dead & the sequel established director Sam Raimi’s rep andshowy style. It’s surprising that he and Bruce Campbell (the star of the others in the series) are Executive Producers on this 5th installment, because it clearly lacks the punch of the originals. The plot revolves around a mother, her sister and her 3 kids who have to face the release of the malevolent force that viciously destroys everything in its path. The expected elements are there, zoom flying cameras (made much easier by drones), airborne body parts, flooding blood and creepy voices, but it all lacks any originality or impact. Even worse, there’s no humor, which was the hallmark of the earlier ones. Basically, this is another “possession” thriller that doesn’t come close to the excitement that’s expected from this franchise.
