Fellow Travelers

Matt Bomer plays a gay man who maintains a relationship with a woman (Allison Wiliams) to protect his career. The character brilliantly created by Jonathan Bailey is also gay, but he’s struggling with coming out and his religious faith. This series follows the lives and romance of this couple from the horrors of the 50s McCarthy era “lavender purge” (with Roy Cohn playing a big part) thru Vietnam War protests, disco days and the AIDS crisis. To expand the experience, the decades are also presented thru the lens of their Black friend (Noah J. Ricketts). The duo’s relationship goes thru struggles, but their love remains solid, if problematic. The historical background places the love story in perspective thru a political lens. There are also sex scenes which are tasteful, but hot (and may make some people uncomfortable). The show’s writing effectively expands their world, while grounding the series in their potent love story. What makes this show so enthralling is the fine performances by everyone, especially the 2 leads, who are continually compelling. NOTE: Look for our own Capital Square that was used for McCarthy’s press conference. (Review based on 5 out of 8 episodes) 4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5)
