Feud: Capote vs. the Swans

The first season of Ryan Murphy’s series was a feud between Crawford & Davis. This new one fast forward to the 60s, when Truman Capote (Tom Hollander) was at his most popular. His well-known relationship with NYC’s society dames begins full of affection and luxury, but things got sour once he spilled their secrets in excerpts his novel Answered Prayers. Hollander’s performance marvelously captures Capote’s physicality and voice, in addition to plumbing the highs and lows of his joy and sorrow. As expected, the glimpses into high society life offer plenty of “rich” treats. Murphy has once again assembled some of Hollywood’s finest grande dames as the swans, including Diane Lane, Calista Flockhart, ChloĆ« Sevigny & Naomi Watts (Jessica Lange has a cameo). They’re all fabulous in their luxe looks and evocative performances. The dramas among them keep the stories compelling and make for a fascinating look into a time and crowd that held a magical place in our history. (Review based on 6 of 8 one-hour eps)
NOTE: For a real-life parallel doc, watch The Capote Tapes, which details much of the info from real voices, also on Hulu. 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)
