Showrunner Elizabeth Meriwether made her rep with “New Girl” (which I didn’t watch), but last year’s “Dying for Sex” was exceptional (my 5-star review). Meriwether obviously focuses on women in her shows and this series features 3 standout performances. Emmy Rossum creates a complex character as a new FBI agent who’s obsessed with finding an elusive female serial killer (Lola Petticrew in a brilliantly-deranged turn). The third is Quincy Tyler Bernstine as a more experienced, brusque agent who also has a drinking problem. There are only a few murders, but her methods are diabolical and her motivations drive the story. While the investigation is sufficiently interesting, this is more about the knotty situations created by the interactions of these troubled and complicated personalities. This is a compelling crime drama that’s more about the characters than the crimes. (Review based on 5 out of 8 one-hour eps) 4.0 out of 5.0 stars
