In February, Angela Bassett played POTUS in “Zero Day” (my review). Now it’s Viola Davis’ turn to step into this “science fiction” role as a Black woman president. She heads to the G20 summit to make an important financial statement. Pretty quickly, a terrorist group invades the proceedings, taking world leaders hostage. Of course, she manages to escape with a small group and calls on her former military training to save the day. Davis brings her gravatas to the role, while doing a good job of kicking ass. On the plus side, the action scenes are plentiful and well staged. On the negative, this film is pushing the boundaries of credibility. There are so many situations where the response should be “really?” Even so, the plot’s numerous implausibilities are enveloped in lots of daring escapes and furious hand-to-hand combat. If you can look past the absurdity that abounds, it’s a cracking good time. (3 / 5)
