Happy Gilmore 2

I’ve never been a big fan of Adam Sandler’s bumbling humor and don’t recall liking any of his classic comedies. In this sequel, he returns as the astounding golfer who’s now down on his luck (that trite premise). With encouragement from friends, he gets back into competition. The conflict comes from a new X-games style of golf, but it’s basically a background for a constant barrage of jokes. Surprisingly, many of them land, whether it’s a site gag or corny punchline. In a step forward, Sandler has eschewed his man/boy persona for more of a regular guy. The fun comes from supporting roles with Benny Safdie, as the wacko devoted fan, and Bad Bunny, as Gilmore’s clueless caddy. Ben Stiller and Christopher McDonald do less with their returning characters. Of course, there’s a persistent parade of cameos. The pace is brisk and the string of references to the original adds a nostalgic element. This is a gently sweet comedy with some genuinely amusing moments. 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)
