Anyone who watched SNL from 2010 to 2017 will recognize Vanessa Bayer. She’s parlayed her unique, hesitant, big-smile style into this new series, where she plays a woman eager for a job on a national shopping channel. Once she gets the gig, it comes out that she has cancer (based partially on Bayer’s own experience with childhood leukemia). The twist is: She doesn’t really have cancer, which this results in her obvious dilemma between truth and success. Bayer’s character takes full advantage of her comic awkwardness to the point of sometimes inducing cringes. Fellow SNL alum Molly Shannon adds to the fun, while Jenifer Lewis, as the CEO, makes a wonderfully wicked boss. There are def funny moments and enjoyable characters, but each ep has serious elements that give the show a deeper dramatic effect. Although Bayer doesn’t stray far from her SNL style, it still provides her with a delightful new oddball in an amusing and sweet series. (Eight 30-minute eps) (4 / 5)
