A teenage girl (ChloĆ« Grace Moretz) is a cello playing classical music nerd, who falls in love with a rocker (Jamie Blackley). He turns out to be a devoted fantasy boyfriend. Their sweet relationship and her perfect family are cross-cut with her struggle for life after a traumatic accident. This was a YA bestseller and I was the only audience member who wasn’t a teenage girl. It’s ideally suited for that group. Although the emotional moments are never that moving, it’s affecting cast and the effective storytelling make it a satisfying romance with an existential twist. Interesting note: This was shot in Richmond, Canada (who knew?).
