The movie is based on the autobiographical musical by “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. It revolves around people who live and work in a Hispanic immigrant neighborhood in New York’s Washington Heights, celebrating the culture in an explosion of color and exuberance. Each of the primary characters gets their moment to sing about their challenges and wishes and some of them come together in romantic relationships. On top of this is the ebullient spirit of the community that’s captured in the genuinely zealous performances, the frenetic dancing and the snappy editing. The songs, which blend hip hop and Latin influences, aren’t especially memorable, but director John M. Chu’s staging brings a creative energy. While the downsides of the immigrant experience are mentioned, it’s the effusive essence of celebration that makes this film so appealing. NOTE: Sit thru the credits for one final solo/punchline from Mr. Miranda. (3.5 / 5)
