Jimmy O. Yang plays a waiter in his family’s Chinese restaurant when he witnesses a kidnapping. He teams up with a young cop (Chloe Bennet) to solve the case, while there’s also a stereotypical TV detective team that changes the light every time they enter the scene. This slowly evolves into a weird web of encounters involving local gangs and more. Since Taika Waititi is known for creating left-field shows with creative craziness, I was excited that he’s exec producer and directed the first ep. There are definitely some of his weird touches, but this series continues to amp up the uncanny angles to the point of absurdity and ultimately confusion. The performances are fine with a mean-spirited Ronny Chieng coming into his own about half way thru the series. Even with all the social commentary and bizarre side trips, this series falters as a procedural and even more so as a cool compelling show. (10 one-hour eps) (2 / 5)
