Here’s a look at 2 recent potential thrillers. Smile is a feature, while Cabinet is a series of shorts.

Smile Sosie Bacon (daughter of Kevin) plays a woman who works in a psychiatric hospital. After she witnesses a patient kill herself with a big smile, her suspicions begin. Obvs, there’s an entity inhabiting the bodies of the victims, so she sets out to solve the ghostly unknown. This turns the movie into a mystery procedural instead of a thriller. The occasional moments of self-harm are bloody, but not especially horrifying. Besides that, there is simply nothing original about the story and absolutely no tension to make it suspenseful. 1.5 out of 5 stars (1.5 / 5)

Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities The famed director has created this anthology of 8 Gothic horror stories directed by newish directors. Each one has at least one recognizable name in the cast like Peter Weller, Rupert Grint, Crispin Glover, Dan Stevens & Tim Blake Nelson. Every story stands alone, but none of them stands out. They move with a deliberate pace, taking their time to build interest, but not much suspense. These stories sometimes have a gross element or a creepy otherworldly component, but none of the stories stand out. Graveyard Rats was my fave. 2.5 out of 5 stars (2.5 / 5)
